Getting Started

Importing Your First PDF

1. Open ParsleyPDF and tap the Documents tab
2. Tap the + button to open the iOS document picker
3. Select a PDF file from your device, iCloud Drive, or any connected file provider
4. ParsleyPDF extracts the text and adds the document to your library

Free tier: Up to 3 PDFs with a maximum of 10 pages each.
Pro tier: Unlimited PDFs, up to 500 pages each.

Navigating the App

• Documents tab — your PDF library, where you can browse, search, and open documents
• Settings tab — manage your subscription, access privacy policy, terms of service, and help

Tap any document to open it and access AI features.

AI Chat

AI Chat lets you have a conversation with your document. Ask questions and receive answers grounded in the document's content.

How to Use

1. Open a document from your library
2. Tap the Chat tab
3. Type your question in the message field
4. Tap Send to receive an AI-generated answer

Tips

• Ask specific questions for the best results (e.g., "What methodology did the authors use?")
• The AI cites page numbers so you can verify answers against the source
• Conversation context carries forward — ask follow-up questions naturally
• The AI remembers your last 10 messages for context

Limits

Daily AI request limits include chat messages, document summaries, and quiz generations combined. Counter resets at midnight UTC.

Document Summary

Get an AI-generated overview of your entire document, including key themes, a structured summary, and notable highlights.

How to Use

1. Open a document from your library
2. Tap the Summary tab
3. The summary is generated automatically on first view
4. Once generated, the summary is saved and loads instantly on return

What's Included

• Key themes identified across the document
• Structured summary covering major sections and arguments
• Notable details and significant findings

Summaries are generated once per document. If you'd like a fresh summary, delete the document and re-import it.

Quizzes

Test your understanding of a document with AI-generated multiple-choice questions.

How to Use

1. Open a document from your library
2. Tap the Quiz tab
3. Tap Generate Quiz to create questions
4. Answer each question by selecting one of four options
5. View explanations and page references after answering

Quiz Format

• Each quiz contains multiple-choice questions based on your document
• Each question has 4 answer options with 1 correct answer
• After answering, you see the explanation with references to the source material

Limits

Multi-Document Chat

Pro feature

Chat across multiple documents simultaneously. The AI can compare, contrast, and synthesize information from up to 5 documents at once.

How to Use

1. From the Documents tab, tap and hold a document to select it
2. Select up to 5 documents
3. Tap the Chat action to start a multi-document chat session
4. Ask questions that span multiple documents (e.g., "How do these papers differ on methodology?")

Tips

• Great for literature reviews, comparing sources, or synthesizing research
• The AI identifies which document each piece of information comes from
• Works best with related documents on similar topics

Ephemeral Mode

Process a PDF without saving it to your library. The document exists only in memory for the current session.

How to Use

1. When importing a PDF, choose the Ephemeral option
2. The document opens with a Confidential badge
3. Use all AI features as normal (chat, summary, quiz)
4. When you close the document or the app, it is permanently discarded

When to Use

• Sensitive documents you want to analyze without leaving a trace
• Quick one-time analysis of a document you don't need to keep
• Documents you don't want counting toward your free tier PDF limit

Note: Ephemeral documents are not saved to your library and cannot be recovered after closing.

Confidential Badge

The Confidential badge appears on documents opened in Ephemeral Mode. It serves as a visual indicator that:

• The document is temporary and will not be saved
• No trace of the document will remain on your device after closing
• The document is held in memory only

Managing Documents

Viewing Documents

Tap any document in your library to open it. Use the tabs to switch between the PDF viewer, AI Chat, Summary, and Quiz.

Deleting Documents

Swipe left on a document in your library and tap Delete. This permanently removes the document and all associated data from your device.

Document Storage

All documents are stored locally using Apple's SwiftData framework. Documents are:

• Encrypted at rest by iOS File Protection
• Accessible only to ParsleyPDF (sandboxed)
• Not synced to iCloud or any cloud service
• Permanently deleted when you remove them from the app or uninstall

Subscription Management

Pro Plans

Both plans unlock the full feature set — unlimited imports, 500-page PDFs, unlimited questions, and multi-document chat.

Viewing Your Subscription

Go to ParsleyPDF's Settings tab to see your current status and plan.

Upgrading to Pro

Tap any upgrade prompt in the app, or go to Settings > Subscription to view Pro plans.

Cancelling Your Subscription

1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad
2. Tap your Apple ID > Subscriptions
3. Select ParsleyPDF Pro > Cancel Subscription

Restoring Purchases

If you reinstall ParsleyPDF or switch devices, go to Settings > Subscription and tap Restore Purchases.

Troubleshooting

AI features are slow or not responding

• Verify you have a stable internet connection
• AI features require network access to process your request
• During peak usage, responses may take longer than usual

"Daily limit reached" error

You've hit your daily AI request cap — 20/day for free users, 50/day for Pro Weekly, or 100/day for Pro Monthly subscribers. Resets at midnight UTC.

PDF text isn't extracted correctly

• Some PDFs use non-standard encoding that may not extract cleanly
• Scanned PDFs without an OCR text layer will appear empty
• Password-protected PDFs cannot be processed
